At OC Surgeons, we’re proud to spotlight physicians who not only bring advanced surgical skill and clinical knowledge to their work but also a deep commitment to patient care and community health. Dr. Rahul Sharma is one such provider—a highly respected vascular surgeon whose career path and philosophy reflect a powerful blend of technical excellence, education, and compassion.
Meet Dr. Sharma
Dr. Sharma’s journey in medicine began across the Atlantic. Born in England, he spent his formative years in the UK before moving to Michigan, where he pursued his passion for science and healthcare. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physiology from Michigan State University, laying a strong foundation for his medical training.
He continued on to receive his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in New York, followed by a return to Michigan for his general surgery residency at Michigan State University in Flint. During his time there, he not only honed his clinical and surgical skills but also took on a role as clinical faculty—helping train the next generation of surgeons.
Specialized Expertise: Fellowship-Trained in Vascular Surgery
After completing his general surgery training, Dr. Sharma sought deeper specialization and moved west to California to attend a two-year vascular surgery fellowship at Loma Linda University. This intensive program equipped him with advanced training in treating complex vascular conditions, including diseases of the arteries and veins, stroke prevention surgeries, dialysis access creation, and limb salvage techniques.
Today, he brings that specialized expertise to Orange County, where he is a core member of the team at OC Surgeons, delivering high-level surgical care with a patient-first approach.
A Passion for Limb Salvage and Vascular Disease Prevention
One of Dr. Sharma’s strongest clinical interests lies in limb salvage—a critical area of vascular surgery that focuses on preventing amputation in patients with advanced peripheral artery disease. He is deeply committed to using surgical innovation and early intervention to restore blood flow and save limbs, allowing patients to maintain mobility and quality of life.
In addition, he has a keen interest in stroke prevention through carotid artery surgery and is highly experienced in creating and maintaining dialysis access for patients with kidney disease. His expertise in aortic disease, venous insufficiency and varicose veins has also made him a go-to provider for patients facing complex or chronic vascular conditions.
Educator, Mentor, and Community Advocate
Beyond his surgical achievements, Dr. Sharma has always placed a strong emphasis on education and community outreach. Throughout his career, he has taken on roles that reflect his desire to give back—whether through after-school tutoring in New York City, organizing health drives in underserved areas of Flint, Michigan, or mentoring medical students from his alma mater.
He is also an accomplished academic, having presented at numerous national medical conferences and published extensively on vascular disease. His presentations are known for their depth, clarity, and focus on patient-centered solutions, making him a sought-after speaker in the vascular surgery community.

FAQs About Peripheral Arterial Disease
While age is a risk factor, PAD is often caused by atherosclerosis—plaque buildup in the arteries due to smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
PAD isn’t always curable, but it can be managed effectively with lifestyle changes, medications, and sometimes procedures. Early detection offers the best chance for improvement.
Yes. Untreated PAD can lead to critical limb ischemia, non-healing wounds, infections, or even amputation. It also significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
