Doctors’ visits and unknown diagnoses can be quite stressful and require not only appropriate treatment but compassionate care. If you have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, we understand that this is a difficult time. Our surgeons are experienced in treating both benign and malignant breast conditions. We work cohesively with radiologists, oncologists, and referring physicians to develop a comprehensive care plan to give you the best that Orange County has to offer. YOU are the center of our team and we will do our very best to walk you through this challenging time and make you comfortable with the decisions and treatments that may lie ahead.
What should I expect
for my first visit?
You will meet one of our surgeons who will take a thorough history and perform a physical exam. Try to provide as much history as possible regarding your family members who might have had breast cancer. A list of your medications will be reviewed as well as prior surgeries and medical problems. If you have recent imaging (mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs) please bring them with you if able.
Are there preventative measures I can take or things I can do
to reduce my risk?
Breast cancer does not discriminate and affects patients of all kinds. Breast cancer is not a preventable disease and there are many factors which are out of your control. However, to reduce your risk make sure you are screened regularly. If you are overweight, you should try to maintain a healthy weight. If you are taking hormone replacement or birth control, discuss the risks with your specialist. If you have a family history of breast cancer or BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, you may have a higher risk for breast cancer. Individually, alcohol intake and lack of exercise have also been shown to increase risk of breast cancer.
If I need surgery
what options are available to me?
We work closely with our oncologists and imaging centers to help determine what the best plan is for you as an individual and there is not a “one size fits all” approach. Depending on the diagnosis that you have this may lend to lumpectomy, mastectomy, and lymph node dissection/excision. We work in conjunction with reconstructive surgeons should you need or desire breast reconstruction.
Breast cancer and benign breast pathologies can be an incredibly taxing and stressful time for you and your family.
